ControlPULP: A RISC-V On-Chip Parallel Power Controller for Many-Core HPC Processors with FPGA-Based Hardware-In-The-Loop Power and Thermal Emulation
High-Performance Computing (HPC) processors are nowadays integrated
Cyber-Physical Systems demanding complex and high-bandwidth closed-loop power
and thermal control strategies. To efficiently satisfy real-time multi-input
multi-output (MIMO) optimal power requirements, high-end processors integrate
an on-die power controller system (PCS).
While traditional PCSs are based on a simple microcontroller (MCU)-class
core, more scalable and flexible PCS architectures are required to support
advanced MIMO control algorithms for managing the ever-increasing number of
cores, power states, and process, voltage, and temperature variability.
This paper presents ControlPULP, an open-source, HW/SW RISC-V parallel PCS
platform consisting of a single-core MCU with fast interrupt handling coupled
with a scalable multi-core programmable cluster accelerator and a specialized
DMA engine for the parallel acceleration of real-time power management
policies. ControlPULP relies on FreeRTOS to schedule a reactive power control
firmware (PCF) application layer.
We demonstrate ControlPULP in a power management use-case targeting a
next-generation 72-core HPC processor. We first show that the multi-core
cluster accelerates the PCF, achieving 4.9x speedup compared to single-core
execution, enabling more advanced power management algorithms within the
control hyper-period at a shallow area overhead, about 0.1% the area of a
modern HPC CPU die. We then assess the PCS and PCF by designing an FPGA-based,
closed-loop emulation framework that leverages the heterogeneous SoCs paradigm,
achieving DVFS tracking with a mean deviation within 3% the plant's thermal
design power (TDP) against a software-equivalent model-in-the-loop approach.
Finally, we show that the proposed PCF compares favorably with an
industry-grade control algorithm under computational-intensive workloads.Comment: 33 pages, 11 figure
Predictors of gaming disorder in children and adolescents : a school-based study
Objective: To determine whether psychiatric and gaming pattern variables are associated with gaming disorder in a school-based sample. Methods: We analyzed data from the Brazilian High-Risk Cohort for Psychiatric Disorders, a community sample aged 10 to 18, using questionnaires on gaming use patterns. We applied the Gaming Addiction Scale to diagnose gaming disorder and the Development and Well-Being Behavior Assessment for other diagnoses. Results: Out of 407 subjects, 83 (20.4%) fulfilled the criteria for gaming disorder. More role-playing game players were diagnosed with gaming disorder that any other genre. Gaming disorder rates increased proportionally to the number of genres played. Playing online, being diagnosed with a mental disorder, and more hours of non-stop gaming were associated with higher rates of gaming disorder. When all variables (including age and gender) were considered in a logistic regression model, the number of genres played, the number of non-stop hours, the proportion of online games, and having a diagnosed mental disorder emerged as significant predictors of gaming disorder. Conclusion: Each variable seems to add further risk of gaming disorder among children and adolescents. Monitoring the length of gaming sessions, the number and type of genres played, time spent gaming online, and behavior changes may help parents or guardians identify unhealthy patterns of gaming behavior

Identification of new epidemiological molecular markers by comparative proteomics of serogroup A meningococcal isolates from three pandemic waves
We previously described the first reference map for the proteome of one strain of serogroup A Neisseria meningitidis (MenA), a major cause of epidemic meningitis in humans. As a preliminary finding, in that work we noted that 2-DE protein maps of closely related MenA isolates from different epidemics spreads could be easily compared to detect minor differences and that 2-DE phenotypes attributable to the well-known epidemiological marker tbpB agreed with the genoclouds model of MenA epidemiological variation during pandemic waves. We explored here the possibility that an extended comparative study of 2-DE maps of isolates representative of the nine genoclouds described by Achtman and collaborators could be used to discriminate between strains otherwise undistinguishable. We showed the example of 14 proteins with different 2-DE spot patterns in different genoclouds that could be considered as putative tracers for alike-strains discrimination. We introduce the novel concept that comparative proteomics can be useful in identifying new epidemiological markers for N. meningitidis
Robot-assisted rehabilitation for children with neurological disabilities: Results of the Italian consensus conference CICERONE
Background: The use of robotic technologies in pediatric rehabilitation has seen a large increase, but with a lack of a comprehensive framework about their effectiveness. Objective: An Italian Consensus Conference has been promoted to develop recommendations on these technologies: definitions and classification criteria of devices, indications and limits of their use in neurological diseases, theoretical models, ethical and legal implications. In this paper, we present the results for the pediatric age. Methods: A systematic search on Cochrane Library, PEDro and PubMed was performed. Papers published up to March 1st, 2020, in English, were included and analyzed using the methodology of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine in Oxford, AMSTAR2 and PEDro scales for systematic reviews and RCT, respectively. Results: Some positives aspects emerged in the area of gait: an increased number of children reaching the stance, an improvement in walking distance, speed and endurance. Critical aspects include the heterogeneity of the studied cases, measurements and training protocols. Conclusion: Many studies demonstrate the benefits of robotic training in developmental age. However, it is necessary to increase the number of trials to achieve greater homogeneity between protocols and to confirm the effectiveness of pediatric robotic rehabilitation
